Kelly: Concern over physiotherapy waiting times!!

SDLP Strabane District Cllr Patsy Kelly has expressed concern at the waiting times people in need of physiotherapy are facing in the Western Trust area.

Cllr Kelly said: “It was revealed this week that there are few occupational therapists in the Western Trust than any other trust area and what we want to know is if the same applies to the number of physiotherapists we have here?
“I have been contacted by a number of concerned constituents who are in pain and in great need of treatment, but are having to wait for weeks for physiotherapy.
“Evidence has proven that that the benefits of physiotherapy are manifold, not just in their rehabilitation, but it is also a good value treatment for our health service as it generally reduces the amount of time a person has to spend in hospital.
“The Compton Report states that physiotherapy is a key element in the future of our healthcare, but is this going to be matched with increased funding for physiotherapy services for people in Strabane and the wider Western Trust area?
“The longer someone has to wait for physiotherapy, the more physiotherapy they will need. It is vital that the Department properly resources the Western Trust so that people in Strabane can be afforded the same level of physiotherapy services as their counterparts in other areas of Northern Ireland.”
