West-Tyrone SDLP MLA Joe Byrne
has called on the relevant authorities to take action to carry out much needed
repairs at the Moorlough site in Strabane.
Mr Byrne said “Moorlough is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Strabane area and for quite some time the road around Moorlough has been in need of essential repair work. Many local residents have complained to my office regarding the large number of potholes located on this stretch of road.”
“Potholes are bad for tourism as
anyone wishing to visit Moorlough will not risk their cars being damaged by
driving over them. If anyone does visit Moorlough they will not plan to return.
This has a knock on effect on tourism of which is vital in today’s financial
climate.”
“Tourism is not the only area
that has been affected due to potholes. Moorlough is both popular with families
for days out and with local fishermen. The possible damage to cars due to these
potholes is putting a lot of people off visiting the site.”
“My team and I have been in
contact with the relevant authorities on getting the repairs needed at
Moorlough carried out. To date a temporary solution is in place but I would
like to see a permanent resolution to this problem.”
SDLP Constituency Representative
Daniel McCrossan continued by saying, “In the current economic climate Strabane
must take full advantage of its tourist attractions as tourism is vital for the
local economy. Strabane is lucky to have an attraction such as Moorlough and I believe
that swift action should be taken to see it is maintained to an acceptable
level.”
