BYRNE:
STRABANE CAR PARK RIP OFF!!
SDLP
MLA Joe Byrne in a statement this week expressed his disgust and anger at the
exchange rates offered to euro paying customers at a town centre car park.
Monday 07 January
2013
Mr Byrne was parking
adjacent to his SDLP Constituency office in Strabane on Friday when he used a
two euro coin to cover his parking charge for the hour. Upon receipt of his
ticket, Mr Byrne was shocked to realise the crippling exchange rate offered by
the Department of Regional Development machine. For his 2euro Mr Byrne received
a shocking £1.14, which is an exchange rate of € 1
= £0.57.
Mr Byrne commented ‘’It
is the worst exchange rate I have ever experienced between the euro and the
sterling. I cannot understand why the exchange rate is so bad. In fact I regard
it as a rip off for anybody paying for their car parking in Euro.’’
The SDLP have already
contacted DRD seeking an explanation as to the justifications of such a rip off
which actively discriminates against people shopping with Euro currency in
Strabane. Mr Byrne stresses the
significant deterrent impact it has upon Euro customers visiting the town
centre at a time when Strabane businesses need them most.
I am further writing
formally to the minister for Regional Development seeking an explanation on
this matter.
