Strabane Campaign
for Jobs
The SDLP in Strabane today, Wednesday 17th
October, are launching a bold campaign to lobby and campaign for a jobs
strategy for Strabane.
Joe Byrne MLA speaking at the launch said “After the
disappointment of Strabane not getting the 800 jobs for the new DARD
headquarters, we have been inundated by members of the public expressing their
anger at how Government treats Strabane”.
“Today with the support of the local community, we are
spearheading a positive campaign to get jobs for Strabane through a petition
campaign backed up by a strong community and political lobby. We intend over
the next two weeks to get at least two thousand signatures from the Strabane
people to reinforce this jobs campaign. The SDLP branch in Strabane will be
co-ordinating the actual petition throughout Strabane and district”.
“We believe this is a constructive and pro-active way of
channelling the local community’s anger regarding Government neglect about the
lack of jobs in Strabane town particularly. Strabane has suffered decades of
discrimination and neglect by central Government in Belfast. If devolved
Government means anything then the Stormont Executive must display equality of
opportunity and delivery of jobs to a place like Strabane”.
Cllr. Patsy Kelly speaking after the launch said “My ambition
in politics is to help create jobs in Strabane, and help build the local
economy. At Council I have been committed to helping support the local economy
in Council Committees, the Chamber of Commerce and Strabane Town Centre Forum.
I believe the lack of jobs is the biggest challenge facing Strabane and its
people at this time.”
