These vandals need to take pride in their town and not destroy it!!

Strabane Town Forum member and SDLP representative Liam Stewart has welcomed new trees that have been planted in the spruce up of Castle Street in Strabane Town Centre.

Mr Stewart commented:
“In the last number of months both the Strabane Town Forum and the SDLP, have been lobbying Strabane District Council in an effort to get Castle Street cleaned up to a satisfactory standard. Many business owners felt the lack of maintenance was having a detrimental effect on attracting customers to the town centre and hurting their businesses.”

“I am pleased to see the new trees planted in Castle Street. The trees are very impressive and give Strabanes Town Centre the welcoming character it needs to attract shoppers. Clean, maintained streets are a stepping stone to fulfilling Strabanes economic potential. The council must continue to carry out measures like this in order to support local businesses and maintain employment.”

"However, just before submitting this statement to local newspapers I was shocked and horrified to learn that a tree which had only been planted on Thursday morning had been torn apart in an act of wanton vandalism on friday night on the towns Castle Street."

"As a forum member, the clean up of our town centre has been at the top of the agenda for many months. The town forum will not tolerate such vandalism and will continue to promote the many good things our town has to offer."

"I have discussed this matter with various business owners who shared in my disgust of this unjustifiable act of destruction and plan on meeting with the community policing team on Monday.  The tree which cost almost £500 had been broken off at the stump and used to beat shutters along the town centre premises. Its time these vandals took pride in their town instead of trying to destroy the progress being made."
