Speeding on the Derry Road poses risk to residents.
SDLP Sh. Councillor Patrick Leonard, this week has asked that drivers using the
Derry Road respect the speed limit in the interests of residents and other road
users.
Mr Leonard said; “Speeding on the
Derry road has long been a problem for the residents who reside alongside it
and in the housing estates entering onto it. Many drivers coming in from the
main Derry-Strabane road don’t realise that there is a change in the speed limit
after the junction to Grangewood.
Drivers continue at speeds of 60mph in a
30mph zone, and this is posing massive risks to the health and safety of residents
and the general public. Many drivers, who are travelling at these high speeds,
continue to travel at these speeds, up to, and past the junction which leads to
the Strabane Academy, this means that any of the residents who live along this
stretch of road, have great difficulty in exiting or entering their properties
or housing estates as the traffic travelling along the road are at such high
speeds.
We have had many calls and visits
from residents in the Derry road, Tulacorr area, Town Parks, and Glen Side
areas.
Roads Service has said that they
will investigate the issue and that they are fully aware of the speeding on
this road and the risks it poses to residents and roads users. In the meantime
we have asked that police monitor the traffic on this road much more frequently
to ensure the safety of roads users and pedestrians. We would ask that all users
of this road respect the speed limit in the interests of all users.
